Epilepsy cases on the rise in Eastern Region, over 500 patients in 2020 alone

- The Western Region is recording more cases of epilepsy

- A mental health nurse says the case is prevalent among men

- About 65 million people world over live with epilepsy

More cases of epilepsy are being recorded at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region.

According to a registered mental health nurse at the hospital’s psychiatric department, Nelly Mensah, 506 cases of epilepsy were recorded in 2020 alone, describing the development as “worrying”.

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder that affects 65 million people around the world with several factors such as high fever, head trauma, low blood sugar and alcohol withdrawal causing the seizures.

She intimated that commonly reported causes are the lack of sleep, illness or fever, stress, bright lights, caffeine, alcohol, medicines or drugs skipping meals, overeating and allergy to specific food ingredients adding that the rest are unusual sights, smells and sounds.

In other news

Police dispatch riders have been warned against escorting unauthorized vehicles or face sanctions. The admonition was given on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police by Director-Generals Welfare and MTTD.

COP Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo- Danquah and COP Mr. Frederick Adu- Anim respectively. This was at a meeting with Dispatch Riders at the Police Headquarters.

The Riders were also advised to ride carefully and use the Police Service motorbikes for official duties only.

They were encouraged to take their health seriously and seek periodic medical care. The two Commissioners of Police also took turns to assure the Riders of the Police Administration’s commitment to the welfare of Police Officers.
