18 confirmed dead in Kintampo waterfall disaster

An unfortunate event has once again rocked the nation as 18 people have been confirmed dead at the Kintampo Waterfalls in the Brong Ahafo region after trees crashed on them following a heavy storm on Sunday.

An eyewitness, Awudu Isahaku who spoke to Citi News said, “There was a heavy wind in the Kintampo area earlier today… So the huge tree fell at the top and descended onto the people who were swimming in the river beneath the fall. It has killed about 16 people. We are down here with chainsaw machines cutting the trees in attempt to save the many others trapped under the water. Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service and even some traditional leaders are here.”

Another eyewitness told Starr FM, “Most of them are students of the Wenchi Senior High School. Others are tourists. We are trying to save those who are trapped by cutting the trees with chainsaws.”

The Kintampo Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent, Desmond Owusu Boampong has confirmed the incident and the death toll.

Several others have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Officials of the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police including other disaster management officials have been to the disaster scene in a rescue effort.
