A decade ago, MTN Ghana invested a significant sum of $100,000 into establishing an ICT lab in Adidome, Central Tongu District, with the promise of revolutionizing digital education.

Hailed as a potential game-changer, the facility now stands as a stark reminder of Ghana's persistent challenges with maintenance culture and accountability, having been inactive for about four years.

For thirteen years, this facility, once equipped and operationalised to empower a generation with crucial digital skills, has been largely abandoned.

The computers that once filled its halls are gone, and the infrastructure shows clear signs of neglect.

The DCE's revival plan

However, there's a renewed sense of optimism for the facility's future. The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Central Tongu District has acknowledged the lab's dormant state and outlined a plan for its revival.

Hon. Addison Dodzi Mornyuie, the DCE for the area, in an interview with YEN.com.gh, stated, “Some time ago, it was operationalized by MTN."

For about four years now, it has been inactive. So, what we intend to do is to get some computers to revive the facility by getting in touch with some institutions and individuals for such support.”

The DCE's proactive approach includes reaching out to various institutions and individuals to secure the necessary computer equipment.

This initiative has already shown promising results, with Hon. Mornyuie revealing, “Just last week, I was in touch with a friend who said some computers are on the way from the UK. So he would be supporting me with some of them.”

Addressing the past, the DCE also touched upon the disappearance of previous equipment and the ownership of the facility.

“I learned they provided computers, but I don't know whether they were stolen or taken away.”
“It has always been the property of the assembly and remains the assembly’s property,” the DCE indicated."

This clarifies the ownership and underscores the assembly's responsibility in its restoration.

The District's sole ICT hub

The urgency of reviving the Adidome ICT lab is further underscored by the lack of similar facilities in the district. The DCE emphasized this critical need.

He said, “There is no other ICT lab in the district, except a small one in the Adidome Senior High School.”

This highlights the singular importance of the MTN ICT lab in providing digital education access to a wider community beyond just the senior high school.

The DCE expressed strong confidence in the imminent revival of the facility, linking its operationalization directly to the arrival of the promised computers.

“It won't be long before the place will be put to use again,” the DCE assured, adding that, “It's all about the arrival of the computers my friend spoke to me about. So when they arrive, the place will be operationalized again.”

Previously, YEN.com.gh John Mahama promised Ghanaians that he would take a different approach to infrastructural projects if elected as president in 2024.

He told NDC delegates and supporters in Tano South on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, that he would take stock of all abandoned projects and complete them.

Mahama warmed the hearts of hundreds of NDC members when he said that, because of the then economic crisis, there was no need to borrow huge funds to start new projects.
