The incident, which occurred around 10 PM, saw four individuals in the vehicle injured, two of whom sustained severe injuries and were promptly transported to the hospital by police who were ‘luckily’ passing by.
Community rallies for rescue
Zikpuitor Prosper Hayibor, a local traditional leader in Wegbe, recounted the immediate aftermath of the incident and the community's swift response.
“Around 10 pm on Saturday, September 13, we were informed that a vehicle plunged into the water. Anytime it happens, I gather the youth, and what needs to be done, we do it. So yesterday, I gathered them, and we came and rescued those in the truck. There were four; two were severely injured and were taken to the hospital by the police who were luckily passing by at the time,” Zikpuitor Hayibor told YEN.com.gh.
Meanwhile, efforts to retrieve the submerged vehicle have proven more difficult.
On the morning of Sunday, September 14, all efforts to retrieve the submerged vehicle were futile.
The residents, along with a caterpillar machine provided by the Hohoe municipal assembly, attempted to pull the truck out of the water. However, these attempts have still been unsuccessful.
“Early in the morning [on Sunday], we came again to pull the vehicle out of the water. But it was becoming difficult. Even a caterpillar machine brought in by the district assembly could not lift the vehicle out of the water. So we are now thinking of how to successfully pull out the vehicle,” the traditional leader indicated.

Citizens stop truck with insecurely chained containers
Previously, YEN.com.gh reported that concerned citizens stopped a long truck at Tema Free Zones after spotting insecure containers tied with only a small dog chain.
The citizens filmed the incident, warning that it could have caused a deadly accident on the busy Ghanaian road. They called the police to witness the stopped truck and refused to let the driver leave despite his repeated pleas.
According to them, the vehicle had earlier passed a Free Zones checkpoint without penalties, sparking outrage. The container on the truck was seen balanced halfway on its carrier, making the situation even more risky.
