Former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, widely known by his ring name Ayitey Powers, has been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command over an alleged death threat directed at the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo.

The arrest took place on Monday, August 24, 2026, after a video allegedly showing the 46-year-old making the threat spread across social media platforms.

The Accra Regional Police Command confirmed the arrest through an official statement signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs of the Command.

"The arrest follows a video circulating on social media in which the suspect is alleged to have issued the threat," the statement read.

Authorities confirmed that Ayitey Okai remains in custody and is currently cooperating with investigators. The Command indicated that the investigation is focused on establishing the full circumstances surrounding the alleged threat, and that appropriate action will be taken in line with the law once that process is complete.

Police Urge Public Restraint

The Command used the statement to caution the public against sharing unverified information about the matter while investigations are ongoing, reflecting concerns that the circulation of unconfirmed details could interfere with the process.

No charges had been formally filed at the time of the statement, and the Command did not indicate a timeline for the conclusion of investigations.

Ayitey Powers is a well-known figure in Ghanaian sporting circles, having built a prominent career in professional boxing before retiring from the sport.
