After a tightly contested first half full of chances at both ends, the game remained finely poised heading into the hour mark with both teams desperate for a breakthrough.
Barcelona eventually struck first when summer signing Rashford headed home, before adding a second with a stunning finish just 10 minutes later, as per Supersport.
In the aftermath, players, supporters and pundits have flocked to social media to hail the England star, with one statistic from his dazzling display leaving Manchester United fans particularly uneasy.
Fabrizio Romano posted on X:
"First and then second goals as Barcelona player for Marcus Rashford! Special moment as he scores in England, at St James Park, in Champions League."
After Rahsford's relationship with Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim publicly broke down, it became evident over the summer that a departure was best for all parties.
While several clubs showed interest, including Aston Villa, where Rashford spent a brief loan spell in January, the 27-year-old ultimately sealed a dream transfer to Barcelona, even though his debut was cut short.
His dazzling display against Newcastle highlighted a near-perfect start to life in Spain, with analyst Statman Dave noting he now matches United’s entire squad for goals scored against Premier League opposition this season.
Manchester United have managed just four goals in their opening four Premier League fixtures, but only two of them have actually come from their own players.
In the 1-1 draw with Fulham, Rodrigo Muniz diverted the ball into his own net from a Bryan Mbeumo corner, while United’s opener in the 3-2 win over Burnley was another own goal, this time from Josh Cullen.
Mbeumo later struck his first goal at Old Trafford to restore United’s lead, before captain Bruno Fernandes sealed the victory with an injury-time penalty.

Marcus Rashford makes scoring vow
Rashford, expected to shine at Catalunya, has now registered two goals and an assist in his last two outings for Barcelona and will look to sustain that form as he adapts to life under Hansi Flick.
He promised to keep finding the net after opening his account against Newcastle in the Champions League.
“The truth is, I’m going to try to keep scoring more. With the second, the technique is good, but I’ve worked on this all my life, and this is more about confidence and daring to get close to the goal," Rashford told Movistar.
“It’s difficult to be a starter because we have a team with top players. Coming to a new city, a new culture... I feel more and more comfortable. I’m enjoying it. As the season progresses, I think I’ll play better.”
