Herve Renard U-Turn: Saudi Arabia Dash Ghana’s Hopes for Black Stars Coach
- Ghana’s search for a replacement for Otto Addo has suffered another setback following the latest decision by Hervé Renard
- The Frenchman had been tipped as an early favourite for the Black Stars job after Addo’s dismissal
- Renard's decision now means all three of the initial frontrunners have opted out of taking up the role
Ghana’s search for a new Black Stars coach has taken a major hit after Hervé Renard opted to remain with Saudi Arabia.
The Frenchman had emerged as a leading contender following the dismissal of Otto Addo, but fresh developments suggest he will not be available, at least for now.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, the Ghana Football Association must once again rethink its options.

Renard stays with Saudi despite Ghana links
Renard’s connection to Ghana dates back to 2008 when he joined Claude Le Roy’s backroom staff ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“I’m very happy to be coming to Ghana. I will be the physical coach, and also I can be an assistant on the field,” Renard said at the time, as quoted by Ghanafa.org.
"Ghana is a very good opportunity for me,” he stressed.
Although he never took charge as head coach, Renard built a strong reputation across Africa. He led Zambia and the Ivory Coast to AFCON titles in 2012 and 2015, both times denying Ghana.
His name resurfaced after Ghana parted ways with Addo following a heavy 7-2 aggregate defeat to Austria and Germany last month.
Reports from Saudi Arabia initially suggested he was on his way out after a string of poor results, including a heavy loss to Egypt.
There were even claims that his final assignment would be a friendly against Serbia. However, that narrative has since changed.
According to L’Equipe, the 57-year-old has decided to stay on as head coach of Saudi Arabia, despite earlier doubts about his future.
Saudi Arabia’s task at the World Cup also underlines why Renard may be reluctant to walk away now.
They have been drawn in a difficult group alongside Uruguay, Spain and Cape Verde, a challenge that demands full focus.
His current contract runs until after the 2026 World Cup, which could leave Ghana considering a short-term arrangement if they still view him as a long-term target.

Kwesi Appiah emerges as strong alternative
With Renard no longer an immediate option, attention has shifted to other candidates. Kwesi Appiah is increasingly seen as a viable solution.
The Sudan head coach is reportedly open to returning for a third spell and is willing to take the role either on an interim basis or as a permanent appointment.
Meanwhile, other high-profile names have also dropped out of the race. Walid Regragui has asked not to be considered, while Joachim Low has denied any contact with the GFA.
For Ghana, time is ticking. GFA president Kurt Okraku has indicated that a new coach will be appointed within two weeks.

In another publication, YEN.com.gh reported that the GFA has set key requirements for the next Black Stars coach after the dismissal of Otto Addo.
GFA president Kurt Okraku disclosed that the new coach must have a strong track record and possess two other key traits.
