What should have been a joyful journey home after Brighton's emphatic 4-0 victory over Aston Villa ended in tragedy after a 72-year-old supporter died outside the Amex Stadium.

Brighton fan dies after Aston Villa win

The fan, whose identity has not been released, fell ill while making his way towards a supporters' club coach in the car park on Saturday evening, August 23.

Club staff and emergency responders immediately rushed to help, but despite prolonged CPR, he could not be saved.

South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics, St John's Ambulance volunteers, Sussex Police, MB Medical Solutions, the club's crowd doctor and stewards all attended the scene.

Brighton chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber expressed the club's sadness over the loss, as cited by Brighton's official website:

"What should have been an ordinary and happy journey home ended in heartbreaking circumstances, and we are all shocked and saddened by the loss of one of our supporters. We extend our sincere condolences to the gentleman's family and friends."

The news quickly prompted an outpouring of sympathy from supporters online.

Brighton thrash Aston Villa 4-0

The tragedy came after Brighton had produced one of the most impressive performances of the opening Premier League weekend.

Victor Lindelof's own goal put the hosts ahead in the eighth minute before Maxim De Cuyper doubled their advantage ten minutes later.

Jack Hinshelwood then struck twice in quick succession to complete the rout, while Aston Villa's afternoon was made even worse when Joao Gomes was sent off.

The victory moved Brighton to the top of the Premier League table after the opening round, but the result was ultimately overshadowed by the heartbreaking loss of one of their supporters.
