Ghanaian footballer dies while playing football in Kumasi

-A footballer is reported to have fallen unconscious and later died during a football match

-A doctor who was at the scene indicated that he died after a second CPR was conducted on him

Sad news reaching YEN.com.gh indicate that a 25-year old footballer called Akwasi Poku, fell and died on the football pitch during a match being played in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

According to reports, the footballer was allegedly hit in the throat by an opponent but he rose to his feet, shook off the injury and continued playing.

Minutes after the injury, Akwasi Poku popularly known in the locality as Akwasi Artem, fell onto the pitch unconscious.

A medical practitioner, Dr Kwesi Opoku who happened to be on the pitch at the time of the incident reportedly performed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on Akwasi Poku and managed to resuscitate him.

The incident occurred on January 3 this year.

According to Dr Kwesi Opoku, the footballer was conveyed to the Manhyia Hospital to receive further treatment.

Akwasi Poku was reported to have been up on his feet for over an hour only to collapse again leading to his untimely demise.

Akwasi Poku was one of the players representing his community known as CPC which is a suburb of Kumasi against Tafo, another suburb in Kumasi at the Konadu Yiadom Park in Ashtown, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Even though a post-mortem report over the death of Akwasi Poku is yet to be released, Dr. Kwesi Opoku revealed that a lot of blood was sucked out of the chest of the deceased.

The medical practitioner went on to advice footballers and sportsmen and women in general to be very careful about their fitness and health statuses before engaging in their chosen sporting activities.
