5 of the most reckless things Ken Agyapong has done but gotten away with

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has been described as a maverick by many in the political news media.

This is because the lawmaker has gained notoriety for incendiary comments that have sparked the anger of even some within his New Patriotic Party. He has been condemned in the strongest of terms.

But time and again, Agyapong has gotten away with such recklessness. This is even at times when he has been charged by the state.

It is rather difficult to explain why and how he gets away with such behaviour. But since he has accumulated so much, YEN.com.gh recounts five times Agyapong has gotten away with his behaviour.

1. Calling for a free for all fight among ethnic groups

Prior to the 2012 general elections, Agyapong called on Akans to defend themselves against people from other ethnic groups from perceived attacks.

The state charged him with treason after those comments. But members of the NPP supported him until the state dropped the charges.

2. The insults against then NDC national organiser, Kofi Adams

In 2015, he aimed insults at then national organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams on a TV show, labeling him a “cheap boy”, who was unfit to be his “house help”.

The NPP never got him to apologise and media houses did not stop inviting him.

3. Describing a former EC chairperson as a beneficiary of "sex for favours"

In 2016, Agyapong said then head of the Electoral Commission (EC) was given the position because of sexual favours she did president John Mahama.

As the NPP were not fans of Charlotte Osei, they helped Agyapong get away with it. Patriarchal misogyny in our society also helped him.

4. He called fellow lawmakers "foolish and useless"

There was a parliamentary sitting held on the issue. But as it were, Agyapong argued his out of any punishment for calling the lawmakers and the house of Parliament "stupid and foolish".

This shocked a lot of Ghanaians in 2018.

5. Releasing the photos of undercover investigative journalists

The most recent of Agyapongs's indiscretions involve releasing photos of members of the Tiger Eye Investigations team.

This was not illegal or even immoral. But for some reason, it looked a lot like irresponsibility.
