Lesotho police have charged their first lady with murder in relation to the brutal murder of the prime minister's previous wife.

eNCA reports that Maesaiah Thabane spent an evening in police custody after handing herself over.

Deputy police commissioner Paseka Mokete says investigations have been completed, with the 42-year-old charged with murder along with eight co-accused.

Mokete is adamant law enforcement has managed to build a strong case against Thabane, who will be appearing in court on Tuesday.

The first lady disappeared after being summoned as part of the investigation into the brutal killing of Lipolelo Thabane, Prime Minister Thomas Thabane's estranged wife.

YEN gathered bitter divorce proceedings had been underway when she was mercilessly gunned down outside of her Maseru home.

The death alarmed the capital city in 2017, just two days shy of the prime minister's inauguration.

The case made new progress with a breakthrough in the form of a letter from the nation's police chief which went public.

It was alleged that communication records from the day of the murder revealed the prime minister's phone number.

The 80-year-old politician has since caved into demands and offered to resign, but no date has been announced.

Thomas is also being questioned over the murder after a warrant of arrest was issued for his wife.

Top officials in the kingdom's ruling party (All Basotho Convention) claim the prime minister hampered investigations into the crime.

Maesaiah was collected at the South African border after her lawyer managed to make an arrangement with police officials.
