Insurance analyst, Edgar Wiredu, has called for the expulsion of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislator for Tema West from Parliament.
Carlos Ahenkorah shocked the nation on Thursday, January 7, 2021, when he snatched ballot papers during the election of the Speaker of Parliament.
The chaotic process saw the election of Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin as the Speaker of the eighth Parliament of Ghana.
The veteran former Nadowli-Kaleo lawmaker defeated Speaker Professor Mike Oquaye, garnering 138 votes to the latter’s 136.
Speaking on Accra-based CTV, Wiredu likened the conduct of the Tema West MP to terrorism.
“What Carlos Ahenkorah did is another form of a terrorist act,” he stated.
“Such actions, you don’t entertain them, you don’t encourage them; that man, like I said…must be expelled from Parliament,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ahenkorah has been giving some explanations.
According to him, in a statement sighted by YEN.com.gh, he snatched the ballot papers to force a rerun of the election.
He said it was very tough for him to imagine having a speaker from an opposition party presides over happening in the House with Akufo-Addo being the president of Ghana.
“It’s a very tough situation to have opposition as a speaker especially when he’s the president in the absence of Nana Addo and his vice not to mention how parliament would function bypassing the president's policies and laws to pave way for development,” Ahenkorah said.
In other news, hundreds of supporters and sympathisers of the NDC have thronged the streets of Damango to demonstrate against the reelection of Akufo-Addo barely 24 hours after taking the oath of office.
Donning party colours, they burnt tyres as they marched through the principal streets of the capital of the Savanna Region on Friday, January 8, 2021.
The NDC and its presidential candidate in the 2020 polls have rejected the outcome as declared by the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa.
