EC admits to errors in results collation but says it’s negligible

-However, the errors were insignificant to warrant a rerun of the elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) says it was likely it committed mistakes in the collation and computation of results for the 2020 presidential elections.

This admission was contained in the commission’s response to the petition filed before the Supreme Court by John Dramani Mahama challenging the credibility of the polls.

Mahama in his petition wants the apex court to among other things invalidate the outcome of the presidential race and order a rerun between him and President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Despite dismissing Mahama’s allegations that the elections were rigged for the president, the Jean Mensa-led commission admitted to some insignificant errors in the tabulation of the results.

“…there is a possibility of minor discrepancies as a result of computational and mathematical errors made in the course of the collation of results, but these did not have a material effect on the overall results as declared,” the EC response read in parts.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo prayed the Court throws out the petition.

Mahama, the presidential candidate of the NDC in the 2020 general polls refused to concede defeat in the elections.

Akufo-Addo won the elections, declared by the Electoral Commission (EC). He collected 51.302% of the votes to defeat Mahama, who polled 43.359%.

Responding to the petition through his lawyers, Akufo-Addo dismissed it as “lacking substance and does not measure up to the legal criteria for an action.”

The president further argued that the petition failed to prove any attack on the credibility of the 2020 polls, which was held throughout the 38,622 polling stations and 311 special voting centres across the country.
