NCA Fines Airtel GH¢50,000 For Failing Quality Of Service Tests

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has fined telecom operator, Airtel GH¢50,000 for its failure to meet the authority's quality of service tests.

According to the NCA, Airtel fell short of passing the Stand-alone Dedicated Control Channel (SDCCH) Congestion Rate Test (Note: the SDCCH is mainly for the reliable connection for signaling and Short Message Service (SMS) messages) in the Upper West Region and also its poor 3G network coverage in Wa, Lawra, Tumu and Jirapa. The approved benchmark for the measurement of these congestion rate is documented to be equal or less than 1% but Airtel is said to have fell below the 1% parameter.

In the meantime, Airtel has until the 25th of December to effect the needed adjustments to its technical signal expansion in the said areas. Airtel remains the fourth largest telecom operator in Ghana with MTN been the first.
