The one-week observance for the late Member of Parliament for the Akwatia constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi, was held at the Akyem Wenchi Funeral Grounds on Friday, August 29, 2025.

Many top officials from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including former President Nana Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Matthew Opoku-Prempeh and Minority Leader of Parliament Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, were present at the solemn event.
The late Ernest Yaw Kumi's widow, family members and the residents of Akwatia also attended the one-week observance to mourn.

NPP supporters hoot at NDC members
At the one-week observance in Akwatia, officials from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), including the party's National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, also showed up to mourn the late Ernest Kumi.
However, chaos ensued as the NDC officials received a hostile reception from numerous supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during their arrival at the Akyem Wenchi Funeral Grounds.
In a video seen by YEN.com.gh, angry NPP supporters hooted at Johnson Asiedu Nketia and his entourage immediately and called for them to leave after they stormed the funeral grounds.
Some agitated supporters had to he held back by some security personnel as they attempted to confront and physically assault the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Tensions escalated at the one-week observance event as supporters from the NPP and NDC almost engaged in a physical altercation
Johnson Asiedu Nketia and other members had arrived in the Akwatia constituency days ago to embark on a campaign to help secure victory for the NDC's parliamentary candidate Bernard Baidoo ahead of the by-elections on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Ernest Kumi's demise and fallout
Ernest Kumi died at the Lister Hospital in Accra on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a short illness. He left behind a wife and his children.
Reports indicated that he passed away at 40 after he was admitted to a medical facility in Accra.

Following his unfortunate demise, many Ghanaian lawmakers and political figures from the NPP and NDC took to social media to pay tribute to their late colleague.
Numerous political figures, including former president Nana Akufo-Addo and Sarah Adwoa Safo, visited Ernest Yaw Kumi's residence to commiserate with the late MP's family.
