Who is Pope Leo XIV?
Pope Leo XIV is the head of the Catholic Church and the sovereign of Vatican City. Born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, United States, he is the first pope in history to be born in the United States.
Before becoming pope, he served as a Catholic priest, bishop and missionary in Peru, where he spent many years working with local communities.
He later held senior positions in the Catholic Church, including serving as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a Vatican office responsible for advising on the selection of bishops.
He was elected the 267th pope on May 8, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis. By choosing the name Leo XIV, he became the first Augustinian pope and the first American-born pontiff.
