Akwatia By-Election: NDC’s Bernard Baidoo Tipped to Win Contest by Top Pollster
- The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, is tipped by polls to win the upcoming by-election
- The parliamentary seat became vacant after the death of its Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, on July 7, 2025
- Solomon K. Asumadu will be representing the New Patriotic Party in the by-election which is scheduled for September 2
Global Info Analytics has projected victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako, in the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
According to the poll, Bediako has 53% of the vote while Solomon K. Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) trails with 47%.

The survey was conducted between August 27 and 28 with a sample size of 2,050 voters across the constituency.
Per the survey, voters in the constituency are most invested in development projects, with 42% of them saying it would influence their votes.
This was followed by the economy at 15%, education at 13% and jobs at 10%.
The popularity of the candidates is only influencing 2% of the voters in Akwatia, according to the poll.
In a comment to YEN.com.gh, the head of polls at Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, said this was likely because "they don't have a good candidate, in hindsight."
Why the Akwatia MP seat is vacant
The parliamentary seat became vacant after the death of its MP, Ernest Kumi, on July 7, 2025.
The Electoral Commission set a date of September 2, 2025, for the Akwatia by-election.
Baidoo, a lawyer and constituency secretary of the NDC, won a primary to represent his party, while Asumadu was endorsed without a primary process.

Police seize guns in Akwatia ahead of by-election
The Eastern South Regional Police Command arrested 10 suspects and retrieved nine weapons in separate operations at Akwatia.
These actions by law enforcers were part of ongoing security operations ahead of the by-election in the Eastern Regional town.
The weapons seized by the police reportedly included eight pump-action guns and one locally manufactured single-barreled gun.
IGP sends strong warning to NDC and NPP
Ahead of the election, the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, issued a warning to supporters of the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party in anticipation of the Akwatia parliamentary by-election.
Speaking to the media, the Inspector General of Police assured that any person causing trouble at Akwatia would be decisively dealt with.
Yohuno said the Ghana Police Service was ready to ensure a peaceful atmosphere, protecting lives and property, before, during and after the Akwatia by-election.
He also cautioned the supporters of the candidates contesting in the elections to avoid carrying weapons to any of the polling stations.
He spoke after members of the Police Management Board engaged various stakeholders ahead of the Akwatia by-election to discuss security arrangements to ensure peace, law and order on August 19.
Police hold simulation in Akwatia
YEN.com.gh reported that the Ghana Police Service held a simulation exercise as part ahead of the Akwatia by-election.
Parts of the simulation, including a response to a vehicle attempting to escape with a ballot box, were captured by the media.
