James Agalga: NDC Names New Majority Leader in Parliament

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has named James Agalga as its new Majority Leader in Parliament, following a Cabinet reshuffle that saw his predecessor tapped for a ministerial role.

President John Dramani Mahama nominated the outgoing Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, for a Cabinet position, which required him to vacate the parliamentary leadership role.

Agalga, who previously served as a Deputy Minister for the Interior, has now been elevated to lead the Majority side in the House.

Beyond the Majority Leader change, the reshuffle introduced several portfolio shifts among sitting Members of Parliament.

Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has been moved from the Ministry of Works and Housing to the Ministry of Defence, while Ahmed Ibrahim, MP, transitions from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.

President Mahama also nominated Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, MP, as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation-designate. Her nomination, like the others, is subject to parliamentary approval before she can assume the role.

A statement from the Presidency confirmed that all the changes have been formally submitted to Parliament through the Speaker, as required under Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

The provision mandates that presidential ministerial nominees be drawn from Parliament or appointed from outside, with parliamentary endorsement required to take effect.

NDC confirms date and schedule for internal election

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Ghana's National Democratic Congress (NDC) released an official schedule for its internal executive elections at all three tiers of the party's structure, setting the stage for a phased voting process from October through December 2026.

The timetable received approval from the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) on 4 August 2026. According to a report by GhanaWeb, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Madam Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, made the formal announcement,

framing the exercise as central to the party's preparations ahead of the 2028 general elections.
