Pampaso Land Dispute Escalates As Chiefs Perform Spiritual Rites Against Top Government Officials

The Pampaso Sub-Traditional Council in Kumasi has taken the dramatic step of performing spiritual rites against three senior public officials over a land dispute it says has gone unresolved for too long.

The council, according to reports by Joy News on August 7, 2026, directed the curses at Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto, and Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak.
At the centre of the row is a parcel of land currently occupied by the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters, Police bungalows, the Children's Hospital area and adjoining properties, which the council insists belongs to the Pampaso Stool.
According to the Pampaso Gyaasehene, Nana Obeng Afriyie, the original grant of land was made by the Chief of Pampaso to the government exclusively for public use.
The council does not contest that portion of the arrangement.
What it strongly objects to, he said, is the Police Command's alleged expansion beyond those agreed boundaries and the subsequent allocation of additional stool land to a private developer for the construction of shops, all without the consent of the Pampaso Stool or the Asantehene.
Nana Obeng Afriyie further claimed that both the Police Commander and the Kumasi Mayor had appeared before the Traditional Council to defend the Police Service's position but left without producing any documentation to support a lawful claim to the extended area.
He also alleged that the Interior Minister had been actively supporting the officials in what the council describes as an unlawful takeover.
As a direct response, the chiefs carried out traditional rites at the disputed site, slaughtering a sheep and calling on their ancestral gods to hold the three officials accountable should they continue to occupy the contested land.
Pampaso land dispute: Mayor denies any wrongdoing
Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi flatly rejected the allegations. He said neither he nor the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly had any hand in approving or facilitating the construction of commercial structures on the disputed property.
On the spiritual sanctions, the Mayor was equally firm.
"I am not scared of their curse because I have no involvement in the construction of the police stores in Adum-Pampaso," he said.
He argued that the appropriate path for resolving any land disagreement lies through established traditional and legal channels, not ritual condemnation.
He also issued a direct warning to the chiefs involved:
"I have not seen the video yet, and I will report members of the Adum-Pampaso Traditional Council who were involved to the Asantehene if I see video evidence of them cursing me."

Miracles' houses and lands frozen by EOCO
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that NPP communicator and aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has had his bank accounts and properties frozen by court order following an arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
A High Court granted EOCO the freezing order on August 3, 2026, as part of a broader investigation into alleged corruption-related offences involving Aboagye.
The order covers five bank accounts, with all transactions on those accounts immediately suspended.
