"Give me Breakfast Money": Immigration Officer Transferred After Asking Traveller For Bribe

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has confirmed that a female Ghana Immigration Service officer, filmed demanding money for what she called "breakfast" from a traveller, is no longer posted at the Accra International Airport following the incident.

GACL disclosed this in an official statement on Thursday, August 6, 2026, confirming that the Ghana Immigration Service took action after the footage went viral online.

Immigration Officer removed over bribery video

"Management has also taken note of a viral video showing a Ghana Immigration Service officer demanding money for 'breakfast' from a passenger. The Ghana Immigration Service has confirmed that the officer in question has since been transferred from the airport," portions of the GACL statement read.

The disclosure forms part of a wider set of actions the company announced in response to growing concerns about extortion by officials operating within the airport.

Port health officers barred from all GACL airports

In a separate incident on August 5, 2026, two Port Health officers stationed inside Terminal 3 were found to have overcharged a foreign passport holder for a Yellow Fever Card.

The standard fee for foreign nationals is USD 20, while Ghanaian passport holders are charged GH₵100. The two officers allegedly collected USD 40 from the passenger, double the approved amount.

GACL responded by immediately withdrawing and deactivating the identity cards that granted the officers access to operate within the terminal.

As of August 6, 2026, both officers have been barred from working at the Accra International Airport and any other airport under GACL's management.

"Immediate action has been taken: Their ID cards to operate in the terminal have been withdrawn and deactivated. As of Thursday, 6th August 2026, the two officers are no longer permitted to work at Accra International Airport or any other GACL-operated airport," the statement confirmed.

GACL warns of ongoing monitoring

GACL stated that it is treating the issue of extortion at its facilities with seriousness, warning that officials on airport grounds remain under active monitoring.

The company also called on passengers who encounter similar behaviour to document what they witness and submit reports through available channels.

Airport workers sacked for begging money

Earlier, YEN.com.gh wrote about JoyNews who published a report after the viral story of a Ghanaian man who claimed that airport employes had requested money from travellers.

Almost every employe he came across at Accra International Airport, according to the man, stopped to ask him for money before carrying out their responsibilities.

Two employes implicated in the begging events were fired by Ghana Airports Company Limited in response to the strong public outcry.
