Lionel Messi set to break scoring jinx at Old Trafford against Man United

- Lionel Messi returns to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in 11 years

- Messi will be looking to erase Barcelona loss to United in the UCL in 2008

- The Barca talisman has scored against the Red Devils in two different finals

Lionel Messi will be making a return to Old Trafford for the first time since 2008 to face Man United in the Champions League quarter finals.

In that fixture, Paul Scholes scored the only meaningful chance the Red Devils created, which knocked Barca out of the competition.

And United went on to win the tournament, defeating Chelsea in the finals after John Terry missed his spot-kick during the shoot-outs.

In the semi final clash at Old Trafford, Messi made a thrilling run from his own half as Edwin van der Sar dived full stretch to tip the 20-year-old's effort which seemed destined to the bottom corner.

Now Messi faces the same side with different faces and the Argentine will be casting his mind back to the nightmare at the Theatre of Dreams 11 years back.

But the Barcelona talisman has faced United twice in the 2009 and 2011 finals respectively, where he scored in each of the games to lift the trophy for the Catalans.

But at Old Trafford, Messi will be relishing the chance to find the back of the net at another one of European football's iconic venues.

Messi has scored 22 goals in 29 appearances against Premier League sides in the Champions League, striking nine times against Arsenal.

Liverpool are the only Premier League side Messi has never netted against, failing to do so on two occasions.

And it is likely that the winners of United vs Barca tie will face Jurgen Klopp's men,if they ensure qualification against Porto.

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh had earlier reported that Chris Smalling has insisted that Manchester United are confident going into their Champions League quarterfinal tie with prospect of facing Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Barcelona will be looking to reach the semi-final for the first time since the 2014-15 season when they went on the win the competition.
