The Ghana Football Association is expected to end Carlos Queiroz's short spell as Black Stars coach despite the Portuguese manager guiding the team into the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz took charge only weeks before the tournament after Otto Addo was dismissed 72 days before the World Cup.

Despite the limited preparation time, the 73-year-old helped Ghana beat Panama, draw with England and reach the Round of 32 for the first time since the 2010 tournament. Ghana eventually lost 1-0 to Colombia, ending their campaign.

However, Queiroz's future became uncertain immediately after the defeat. A statement released by the coach was initially viewed as a farewell, although he later clarified that it only referred to Ghana's World Cup campaign.

Interestingly, President John Dramani Mahama has publicly backed Queiroz to remain in charge, but the final decision rests with the GFA Executive Council.

Why Ghana is set to replace Carlos Queiroz

According to sports journalist Samuel Ekow Amoasi Appiah, negotiations have reached a difficult point, with Queiroz's reported demands emerging as the main obstacle to a new agreement.

One of Queiroz's demands of his new contract is that the government pays the salaries of all his assistant coaches, per Nuhu Adams.

The Executive Council is therefore unlikely to approve a renewal, despite the coach achieving Ghana's best World Cup finish since 2010.

Appiah adds that there are some members of the Executive Council who want Desmond Ofei to take charge of the Black Stars, but they are worried about the backlash from the public.

Ivory Coast snaps Ghana's coaching target

Ghana's coaching situation has also been complicated by the availability of another coach the GFA had previously admired – Hervé Renard.

Côte d'Ivoire has confirmed the appointment of Renard as their new head coach, ending any possibility of Ghana pursuing the Frenchman for the Black Stars job.

The Frenchman has long been admired by the GFA and previously coached Côte d'Ivoire to Africa Cup of Nations glory more than a decade ago. He replaces Emerse Faé, whose contract expired on July 31, 2026.

Renard's return creates an intriguing twist because Ghana is scheduled to face Côte d'Ivoire in their opening 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign next month.

For now, the four-time African champions must decide whether to continue with Queiroz or begin another search for a permanent coach.

With the next major assignment already approaching, the GFA has little time to waste.
