- Brain specialists are calling for mothers who press the head so f their babies to be punished
- These specialists say pressing the head of a baby causes brain damage
- Most mothers press the heads of their babies to give them a nice shape
All nursing mothers are being warned against pressing the heads of babies moments after they are born.
Brain specialists (neuroscientists) at the University of Cape Coast say this action by nursing mothers could affect the intelligence of babies when they later grow up.
In Ghana, most of our mothers and other women use warm towels to press on to the skull of their babies so as to have beautiful skulls.
According to Dr Francis Djangmah, who is with the school of physiology says it is deadly for any mother to do such thing to her child.
“Their skull is very soft. If you press so hard on it, you will see a depression on the skull. So the old ladies who are made to bath the children should not press the head so as to change its shape. It has a deleterious effect on the brain of the child. If you press the head, you are going to press directly on the brain and damage the brain cells,” he revealed.
As part of efforts to deal with this issue, Dr. Djangmah says some strict enforcement of the law could best deal with this issue.
