Ghana Event Awards is meant to help encourage other people to aspire to excel just like the awardees. Men of the Year Awards 2018 attracted great male personalities from different professions and fields. The dignitaries in attendance was proof of just how prestigious this event usually is. It is aimed at encouraging younger men to aspire to reach greater heights. In attendance were some of the greatest performers we know of. This year, the legend from Ivory Coast, Freddy Meiway was in attendance as well as songstress Efya of Ghana, both of whom performed at the event.

EMY awards Africa is one of the most prestigious awards in Ghana. The fact that men doing tremendous things are recognized is encouraging to the younger generation. This motivates the younger men to challenge themselves and strive for excellence in their different areas of service. The following is an account of what happened at the 2018 event. Looking at the different winners provides the necessary motivation to keep pushing oneself.

Men of the Year Awards 2018 – list of winners

1. Togbe Afede XIV

He took the Ultimate Man of the Year award also known as the Supremo Flagship Award. The man of the year voting rewarded Togbe for his contributions in the economy of Ghana and the society in general. His leadership at the chieftaincy institution also contributed to him being given the award. Todge Afede is a renowned investment banker with more than 2 decades of experience. He is celebrated for starting a couple of companies in Ghana including the Africa world airline which is the largest domestic and regional airline in Ghana. He has served in various economic committees including being part of the 2009-2012 economic advisory council. Before then, he chaired the economic team in 2009 as the government transitioned. He has served at the board of the Bank of Ghana for a decade. He currently chairs the world trade center in Accra.

2. Dr. Mrs Grace Amey-Obeng

Mrs. Grace received an award for Ultimate Woman of the Year/The Yaa Asantewaa Award. She was rewarded for being instrumental in therapy and beauty education, women empowerment as well as manufacturing. She has also made strides in social entrepreneurship and corporate governance. She is the current chairperson of the United Merchant bank foundation as well as the treasurer of the Association of Ghana industries. She is passionate about women and children issues and as such, has opened the Grace Amey-Obeng foundation international whose aim is taking girls off the streets and equipping them with employable skills.

3. Emeritus Professor Joseph Hanson Kwabena Nketia

Professor Joseph received the lifetime achievement award because of his immense contribution to African music. He is a pioneer in African musicology and is one of the most published reputable African music authorities. One of his finest works include the World acclaimed music of Africa which is in several translations including Chinese, German, Italian and Japanese. He is an emeritus of the University of Ghana music school. He has taught at the University since 1952. He is currently the director of the International center for music and dance. He is also a foundation fellow of Ghana Academy of Arts and sciences. He is an honorary fellow of Royal Anthropological Society of Ireland and Great Britain.

4. Franklin Cudjoe

Franklin who is a fellow of African leadership network received the Citizen Ghana Award for being an outstanding Ghanaian citizen. This has been proven by how dedicated he is at the Imani center for policy and education. This is a center that serves as a think-tank to finding solutions to the society’s problems through free market solutions. At the Center, he has been of help to Ghana’s development in 4 areas namely the rule of law, market growth and development, rights for individuals, as well as in development of institutions and human security.

5. Charles Kojo Fosu aka Daddy Lumba

He received the Icon/Legend of Entertainment Award. This award went towards his relevance and consistency in the music industry. He is an award winning musician whose career is very successful, having been in the industry for over three decades. He has done some of the best music works including the well-known Sika Asem and Aben Wo Ha as part of his thirty-three albums.

6. Emmanuel Kojo Jones-Mensah

He received the Young Achiever Award – Ghana and Africa Rising Star Award. This was because of his contribution in the construction industry with only 6 years of experience in construction, design and development of global real estate. He began as a business development manager in the UK but came back to Ghana to create employment. He currently serves as CEO of Empire concrete limited. He has founded the Empire Domus limited. His give back to society project involves his initiation of a power Africa project which contributes towards clean renewable energy in partnership with some consortiums in UK and Norway.

7. Opanin Kwadwo Kyere

He received the Guardian Award / Mentorship Award. This renowned marriage counselor was rewarded for his dedication to society. He has coached a lot of people to reach their current levels of success through his counseling sessions and seminars.

8. Dr Osei Kwame Despite

He received the Humanitarian of the Year /Philanthropy Award. He is a well-known philanthropist in society. Recently he donated a children’s block to the military hospital.

9. Nicholas Bortey

He received the Inventor Award /Info-technology Award. The assistant IT strategist and business consultant makes use of technological solutions to help businesses realize their true business value. He owns an IT firm which has won a number of accolades as it continues to scale heights in service provision.

10. Dr Moses De-Gualle Dogbatsey

He won the Man of the Year – (Health award) for his contributions in the medical sector. He is a medical doctor and former senior officer of the OKomfo Anokye teaching hospital who has invested in extensive medical research. He has made contributions in the research and treatment of prostate cancer.

11. Dr Kofi Amoa Abban

He was awarded the man of the year (oil and gas award) for his immense contribution in the oil and gas industry. He is the founder of Rigworld Group which operates in West African countries. His company offers recruitment to the industry. He also founded a subsidiary that offers engineering services in the industry. The company is known as Pressure Tech.

12. Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong

He received the Magnate Award /Businessman of the Year. This was because of his contribution to leadership in the economy of Ghana. He has more than 2000 employees under his employment in the 8 ventures that he runs. United 2 Company Limited and Special Ice Company Limited are some of the household names associated with the entrepreneur.

13. Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet

He was awarded for being active in matters of human rights. He was also recognized for championing issues to do with youth opportunities. He ran for presidency in the 2016 elections with the Convention People’s Party ticket. He has also served in 2007-2009 Disability Council.

14. Special recognition awards

These are awards that were given to men with special achievements. The EMY awards Africa went towards recognizing some of the most outstanding performances by men in the society. These include:

  • Man of the year agriculture award which went to John Bewuah Edusei for his special contribution in the sector as a veterinary.
  • Green Corporate Star Award Sponsored by A Rocha Ghana went to Mr. Anthony Pile for his contribution in the economy for his value addition to products approach.
  • Africa humanitarian award which was awarded to Matthew Mensah for his philanthropy and contribution to mankind’s well being.
  • Man of Africa award went to Nelson Mandela for his philanthropy, leadership and activism.
  • Event development in Ghana award went to Mike Amon Kwafo for his contribution in event development in Ghana.
  • Award for discovering commercial oil in Ghana went to Dr George Owusu founder of EO group that deals with exploration of oil and gas in Ghana.

All the above winners deserved the awards they got. They are all individuals of influence. The impact that these people have had in the community in Ghana is tremendous and commendable. Their success is something that should encourage many, especially the youth. It is a reassurance that anyone can achieve great success.
