Some of last year’s releases are sequels of beloved animations released from years back hoping to captivate audiences with nostalgic characters. In this article, we will take a look at the list of animation films released in 2018.
1. Incredibles 2
Incredibles 2 is perhaps the most awaited of the new animated movies 2018. Since the release of its first installment in 2004, fans have waited more than a decade to get off the cliffhanger they have left on over a decade ago. The sequel is no disappointment. It is intended to address some new emerging societal issues all masked with humor. This time Elastigirl takes the lead as the city tries to bring back the superheroes who had previously been made illegal. The Underminers are of course the biggest villains in a plot that builds smoothly over the length of the film. The plot is solid script is filled with light humor that does not try too much to impress you which makes for light moments throughout the movie.
2. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation
An odd title for a movie about a family of vampires, right? Regardless, Dracula, his daughter Mavis and Johnny decide to take a vacation together. On their cruise, the most unexpected thing happens, Dracula falls in love. The twist comes when Dracula finds out that the woman he has fallen in love with, Ericka - the ship’s captain – is a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing, the monster slayer. The plot twist is not hidden from you; instead you are let in on the secret that she does not like monsters either. This leaves you on the edging trying to tell the characters what is going on. Edgy with no dull moments, this easily makes the list of best animated movies 2018.
Smallfoot turns the idea of Bigfoot on its head. The Yeti is a community of creatures that are completely unaware of the existence of humans. They live high in the mountains with no idea there is life below the clouds. It is a celebration of differences and the nuances that come with them. The story is not a new concept, but it is told in a refreshingly different way.
4. Christopher Robin
Christopher Robin is back with the old gang in this one. Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tiger are all getting back together. They embark on an adventure to save Christopher from himself. The story is an annoyingly happy tale, in a good way. The characters bring from the cartoons an immense positivity that is made even more profound with the background of modern life.
5. Isle of Dogs
The Isle of Dogs is an interesting title choice for this movie because it sounds very much like “I love dogs” when you say it. The movie is about a city that has a huge dog population, and an outbreak of dog flu forces the city officials to banish all dogs to a remote garbage island. The stop-motion action is exhilarating. The movie has a fair bit of violence in it, nothing over the top though. The characters are as funny as they are endearing. Of all the animated movies 2018 released, this one might be the best one yet for mature audiences.
6. Peter Rabbit
Released in February 2018, Peter Rabbit is a movie about rabbits fighting for their home. Why? This is because the owner of the farm they have been raiding for food is done dealing with them. Peter Rabbit is a family friendly movie. Kids are sure to like the singing, and the fantasy-filled world where humans interact with the rabbits completely unaware of their sentience.
7. Early Man
An all British cast and an award-winning director -Nick Park- Early Man was set to be great from the start. The movie is about a tribe of early men who are faced with the emergence of new technology, the bronze age. It is captivating and thrilling; furthermore the subtle similarities to the colonial rule are hard to miss.
8. Duck Duck Goose
Duck Duck Goose is full of on the nose humor, that will still make you laugh. The little ducks are a kid’s favorite and the focus on practical humor instead of verbal comedy is a refreshing return to the old school comedy movies. Charming is a different kind of fairy tale. It turns the stories of Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty inside out. Their prince is the same one. They have all fallen under the curse of the same prince who is irresistible to all the ladies in the kingdom, except one. To free all others of his curse, he must pick his one true love. The journey he embarks and the tasks he is to accomplish in order to find love are very similar to the tasks of Hercules, but the love story that unfolds in the movie is still heart-warming.
10. Pokemon The Movie: The Power Of Us
The film adaptation of the Pokemon game was not a blockbuster hit as was expected. The movie is a derivative story with a very similar storyline to all other game-based movies released so far. Ash and Pikachu are out to save a seaside town from attack, and they do so in a way that highlights the importance of collaboration and tolerance of one another’s differences.
11. Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes
You can tell from the title that Shakespeare’s characters, Romeo & Juliet were an inspiration for the characters. As is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock, a detective who is hired by Gnomeo and Juliet to investigate the disappearance of other gnomes. Admittedly, watching animated characters do detective work is a bit of a new thrill with the only recent similar film being Zootopia which is on the list of 2017 animation films. The film has a few adult leaning quips but still makes for a family-friendly watch.
12. Teen Titans Go! To the movies
Full of corny jokes and a lot of fourth wall breaks, this movie will give you a different perspective on the young superheroes of DC Comics. Like the Lego Batman Movies, Teen Titans Go! To the movies is completely funny with a script that has little effect on the building of the plot of the movie. Breaking the fourth wall multiple times means the movie will pretty much be wasted on kids. It remains one of the best anime movies 2018.

As the name suggests, this movie is rated R. The intense action and funny scripting make for a tragic comedy with plenty of diverse characters that each have a piece of their past affecting the mission. The story-lines from many animated movies last year were a little more derivative compared to what the new animated movies 2017 brought to the table. The best animated movies 2017 such as Zootopia and Cars 3 were refreshing and brought even deeper plots to the world of animated movies making the list of 2018 animation films fall just a little short on the innovative scales. Many movies were scheduled for release this year that have since been canceled including Larrikins and Anubis that were sure to bring the 2018 innovative score up.
