2019 WASSCE: Ghanaian students excel in Mathematics and Science
- The 2019 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) recorded significant improvement in the number of candidates who passed Mathematics (core) and Integrated Science
- According to WAEC, 65.31% of the candidates who sat for the exams in 2019 had between A1 and C6 as compared to figures from 2018
- And about 50.52% of the 346,094 candidates who sat for the exams also had between A1 to C6 in the Integrated Science paper
A high number of students excelled in the Mathematics (core) and Integrated Science during the 2019 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).
This is according to statistics from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on the various subjects.
WAEC said 65.31% of the candidates who sat for the exams this year had between A1 and C6 in the Mathematics paper.

Also, 50.52% of the candidates who sat for the exams had between A1 to C6 in Integrated Science.
A statement from WAEC said: “Mathematics (Core) recorded the most significant improvement in A1 to C6 over that of 2018 (38.33% to 65.31%).
“Also, there was a noticeable improvement in Integrated Science (50.52% to 63.17%) with English Language recording a modest improvement of 46.91% to 48.96%. Social Studies also showed a slight improvement in the performance of candidates (73.27% to 75.43%).”
In all, 346,094 candidates participated in the exams nationwide, the Council said. The figure is 9.2% higher than the 2018 candidature of 316,999.
Meanwhile, the Council indicated that, although provisional results for school candidates have been released, others have been withheld.
The examination body said the results of 48,855 students have been withheld due to various cases of examination malpractice.
Some of the candidates are alleged to have brought foreign material such as prepared notes, printed material and mobile phones to the examination hall, and connived with some supervisors to cheat.

WAEC further stated that “the provisional results indicate that there were improvements in the performance of candidates at A1 to C6 in all the core subjects.”
The Council added: “Candidates are to note that all WAEC results are well secured and can be authenticated. Persons with forged results will be exposed.”
