Coronavirus spreads to USA as China returnee infects husband

The fast-spreading coronavirus has been confirmed in the USA after a man in Chicago contracted the virus from his wife who traveled to China.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) disclosed on Thursday, January 30, that this is the first confirmed case of person-to-person transmission of the virus in the country, CNN reports.

The CDC said the woman, who is in her 60s, was diagnosed after returning from Wuhan, China, where the outbreak originated.
Doctors told reporters during a telebriefing that the woman was doing quite well and remains hospitalized primarily for isolation.
Her husband who is also in his 60s did not travel to China but was admitted to the hospital after being infected by his wife.
"Given what we've seen in China versus other countries, CDC experts have expected to find some person-to-person spread in the United States," CDC director Dr Robert Redfield said during the telebriefing.
"Based on what we know now, our assessment remains that the immediate risk to the American public is low."

The Illinois department of public health said the husband was in close contact with his spouse over a long period of time while she was symptomatic.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate has officially reacted to the spread of the deadly coronavirus globally.
Senator Chukwuka Utazi representing Enugu North senatorial district on Thursday, January 30 moved a motion on the coronavirus outbreak and preventive response towards stemming its spread in Nigeria.
After deliberations and more contributions from senators, the Senate then resolved to ensure that the viral coronavirus does not come into Nigeria.
In another report, Osagie Ehanire, the minister of health, on Tuesday, January 28, confirmed that only in 2020, Nigeria has recorded 41 deaths and 258 cases of Lassa fever outbreak in not less than 19 states.
In a briefing on Tuesday, January 28, Ehanire said that Nigerians should embark on massive hygiene in all their activities as a preventive measure, Channels TV reports.
He said that another way to avoid the spread of the viral disease is the covering of food from rats which is the vector.
