Top 11 Senior High Schools In Ghana Based On NSMQ Winnings in 20 years

- In the past two decades, some Senior High Schools have distinguished themselves with exceptional scores and wins at the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ)

- Some of these schools have won the NSMQ back-to-back in the past 20 years

With their exceptional academic records and performance at the National Science and Maths Quiz, eleven Ghanaian schools are regarded as the best senior high schools in Ghana.

While it takes more than just excelling at the National Science and Maths Quiz to be categorised as one of the best senior high schools in Ghana, these eleven schools have also distinguished themselves in other academic engagements and for the past twenty years have emerged winners of the National Science and Maths Quiz.

1. Presbyterian Boys Senior High School – Has won the NSMQ 5 times

Presec, Legon has produced notable alumnus like F.K. Akuffo (former head of state), Augustine Abbey (actor), Kwaku Sintim Misa (actor, TV personality), etc. Presec has won the National Science & Maths Quiz five times in 1995, 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

2. Prempeh College – Has won the NSMQ 4 Times

Prempeh College has produced highly respected dignitaries like former President J.A. Kuffour, Kwabena Duffour and Kwesi Ahwoi. They won the National Science & Maths Quiz in 1994, 1996, 2015 and 2017.

3. St. Peters SHS – Has won the NSMQ 3 Times

The Nkwatia-based school has won the National Science and Maths Quiz trice, in 2000, 2005 and 2018.

4. Achimota School – Has won the NSMQ twice.

Notable alumni from Achimota School are J.J. Rawlings, Kwame Nkrumah, J.E. Atta Mills, Edward Akuffo-Addo, Dawda Jamara (former Gambia Head Of State), Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe President). Achimota School has emerged winners of the NSMQ twice, in 1998 and 2004.

5. Opoku Ware SHS – Has won the NSMQ twice.

Notable alumni of OWASS are P.V. Obeng (mechanical engineer), Kwamena Ahwoi (GIMPA), Kwasi Appiah (former Black Stars Captain), Ken Kurankyi (Daily Searchlight Newspaper), Felix Anyah (Holy Trinity Spa) etc. OWASS has won the NSMQ twice in 1997 and 2002.

6. St. Augustine’s College – Has won the NSMQ twice.

The Cape Coast-based Roman Catholic school, St. Augustine’s College has emerged winners at the National Science and Maths Quiz twice, in 2007 and 2019.

7. Mfantsipim SHS – Has won the NSMQ twice.

Notable Mfantsipim alumni are Kofi Annan, K.A. Busia, De-Graft Johnson, etc. They’ve won the NSMQ twice, in 1999 and 2014.

8. Pope John Senior School – Has won the NSMQ once.

The Koforidua-based SHS has produced notable alumnus like Archbishop G. Palmer, Lt.-Col Omane Agyekum, etc. POJOSS won the NSMQ in 2001.

9. Ghana Secondary Technical School – one-time winners.

The Takoradi-based high school came out as winners of the National Science and Maths Quiz once, in 2012. The school has produced notable alumnus like Sonni Badu (gospel singer), Augustine Arhinful (footballer), Napoleon K. Bulley (Mechanical Lloyd), etc.

10. St. Thomas Aquinas SHS – One-Time Winners.

The Cantonments, Accra-based school came out as winners of the National Science & Maths Quiz in 2013.

11. Adisadel College – One-Time Winners.

The Cape Coast giants won the tournament in 2016
