The music world has lost a great legend and talented drummer in the person of Tony Oladipo Allen.

According to multiple reports, the drummer recently died in Paris where he lived. He was 79 years old at the time of his demise.

Revealing the sad news to AFP, his manager, Eric Trosset, said that his death was sudden and that there is no indication that it was linked to coronavirus.

He said: “We don’t know the exact cause of death. He was in great shape, it was quite sudden. I spoke to him at 1:00 pm (1100 GMT), then two hours later he was sick and taken to Pompidou hospital where he died.”

Allen was Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti’s drummer and they started working together in the 1960s/70s. He was also a part of the famous Africa 70 band that created the Afrobeat genre.

Fela had reportedly said that without Allen there would be no Afrobeat, showing that the drummer was very instrumental to the success of his works.

Allen, however, left Fela’s band in 1979 after they had rifts bordering on royalties. The drummer later moved to London in 1984 then to Paris where he finally settled.

RIP to the talented drummer.
