Rejoinder: Afrifa's family denies man who rejoiced over Rawlings' death

The family of Lieutenant General Akwasi Amankwaah Afrifa, one of Ghana's past military rulers, has denied reports that one of his sons has rejoiced over the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Rawlings passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness.

The news stirred a lot of reactions on social media, one of which came from a Facebook account with the name Akwasi Amankwaah Akoto Afrifa.

As reported by YEN.com.gh, Akoto Afrifa had expressed joy at the death of Rawlings saying it was not tragic enough.

Our report, based on the utterances and reactions to Akoto Afrifa's posts, had indicated that he was the son of the late head of state who was executed alongside other army generals by Rawlings during the June 4 Uprising.

But according to the family of General Afrifa, the said Afrifa is not a son of the military leader as we erroneously believed.

In a rejoinder from the family sent to YEN.com.gh, the family has indicated that none of Afrifa's sons of family members has issued any such statements on Rawlings' death.

"I am the daughter of the late Afrifa and none of my siblings has issued such a statement. The photo accompnaying the story is not a photo of any of my brothers. Please remove the article.

"My family and I would appreaciate it if you could respect our privacy at this time," the rejoined signed by Ama Serwa Afrifa read.
