The Upper East Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Donatus Akamugri, has said that the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings, will not be buried until the party recaptures power.

He made this comment yesterday, Friday, November 20, 2020, when supporters of the party held a vigil in Bolgatanga in honour of the late former president.

Akamugri explained that Rawlings wants the party to bury him and that is why he died just three weeks to election.

According to him, if Rawlings would want an ordinary burial, he would have died long before the election period.

To this end, Akamugri believes that the spirit of the late former president will help the party to win the December 2020 elections.

He said the spirit of Rawlings will be with the party and ensure that it obtains victory in order for him to be buried.

The secretary further disclosed that even if the party does not win the 2020 elections, the body of Rawlings would have to be kept till whenever the NDC recaptures power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Meanwhile, a leading member of the NDC, Stephen Atubiga, has accused President Akufo-Addo of causing the death of Rawlings.

He stressed that the president could have also offered Rawlings protocol to be flown abroad for treatment, adding that he would not have died prematurely as is the case now.

According to him, the president traveled abroad to seek medical care when he fell sick, however, he refused to treat Rawlings that way.

Atubiga has threatened to exhume the corpse of the late statesman if the presidency sidelines the NDC in the funeral arrangements. He argued that the body of the late ex-president is theirs and as such no one should dare take it from them.

Also, Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the NDC, had earlier accused Akufo-Addo of trying to hijack the funeral of Rawlings, who was also the founder of the NDC.
