The Akyeamehene of the Akuapem Traditional Area, Nana Aduna II, who has a wealth of experience in cocoa production says Ghana is not under any threat from China.
According to graphic.com.gh, the cocoa farmer indicated that Ghana's share of the global cocoa market following the entry of China into cocoa production might actually see an increase.
Nana Aduna II explained that Ghana should be challenged to be much more aggressive about adding more value to its cocoa beyond chocolate and cocoa powder due to the development.
"This could be the push and the boost Ghana needs to develop simple local technologies to add value to its cocoa," he further added.
Nana Aduna, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Ohene Cocoa Company Limited gave examples of some of the new products Ghana could explore to be more competitive in the industry.
Cocoa buttercreams, anti-ageing cream, black soap, cocoa butter soap, cocoa pod pellets for fish farming, cocoa potash for fertiliser and energy, furniture from cocoa wood, cocoa husk, and biofuels were notably mentioned.
He concluded it all in the words:
“China’s entry, is a very positive move. It should spur Ghana on to be more aggressive about cocoa value addition beyond chocolate and cocoa powder".
In an earlier report, a video of a cocoa peeling machine invented in China has surfaced on social media in Ghana following recent reports that China might soon be producing more cocoa than Ghana.
In the footage sighted by YEN.com.gh on the Twitter handle of Saddick Adams, the machine is simply stacked with the full cocoa fruit in a shoot.
Within seconds, the husk is removed from the beans mixed with the fruit.
