Kombian, who was sentenced to death for killing two police officers, was found with the two others in the prison main yard at midnight, according to a report by 3fm.com.

It is not clear who removed them from the “condemned cell” where they were being held, but the report said only the vigilance of a prison warden on patrol prevented them from escaping.

Prison officials are said to have launched an investigation into the development.

Kombian has a history of escaping from jail. In 2010, he was arrested by the police with the help of INTERPOL in Togo, where fled after killing two police officers.

He was sentenced to death on August 19, 2015, by hanging on two counts of murder after a seven-member jury returned a verdict of guilty. He is also serving a 30-year jail term on the charge of conspiracy.
