UEL final: Aston Villa to face Freiburg
Trailing 1-0 from the opening leg, Unai Emery’s side produced a ruthless display at Villa Park. Ollie Watkins opened the scoring after being brilliantly set up by Emiliano Buendía, who later added a second from the penalty spot.
Club captain John McGinn then stole the show with two goals in quick succession to complete a stunning comeback and send Villa into their first European final in 44 years.
According to BBC Sport, the Premier League side is now just one game away from winning their first major trophy in three decades and a first European title since 1982.
The final will also mark a sixth Europa League final appearance for manager Unai Emery, who has already won the competition four times.
Watkins sounded confident ahead of the final in Istanbul. He said, as quoted by the club's website:
“There’s no better manager than this to prepare us for the game and to take us into the final.
“His track record speaks for itself. We’re in a good position, but we need to go there and win now.”
Freiburg, meanwhile, booked their place in the final after beating SC Braga in the semi-finals.
The Bundesliga side made the most of Braga being reduced to 10 men after Mario Dorgeles was sent off early in the contest.
Freiburg eventually took control of the tie and secured a famous qualification to their first-ever European final.
After the match, defender Matthias Ginter said via Goal:
"I've completely lost my voice from all the shouting. We just have to take that final step. We now have the most important match in the club's history. For Freiburg, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Supercomputer predicts Europa League winner
Opta’s latest simulations now favour Aston Villa to lift the trophy in Istanbul later this month.
According to the supercomputer, Villa have been handed a 64.71% chance of winning the Europa League, while Freiburg’s chances stand at 35.29%.
The final will be played at Beşiktaş Park, also known as Tüpraş Stadium.
Aside from lifting the trophy, the winners will also secure a place in the 2026/27 Champions League league phase if they fail to qualify through their domestic league campaign, according to UEFA.
For Villa, who chalked up an impressive 10-game winning run earlier in the season, it is an opportunity to continue their remarkable resurgence under Emery.
For Freiburg, it is a chance to make history by winning the first European trophy in the club’s history.
