I did no wrong in buying ¢500,000 Mercedes Benz – Wa Poly Rector speaks
- Angry lecturers of the Wa Polytechnic have accused the Rector of acquiring a vehicle through fraudulent means
- The Rector, Prof. Marfo-Owusu says his condition of service allows him to acquire any vehicle of his choice
The Rector of the Wa Polytechnic, Professor Prof. Emmanuel Marfo-Owusu was on Monday afternoon, chased out of campus with claps and other offensive weapons by some members of the Polytechnic’s faculty.
According to the angry lecturers, the Rector of the institution has used the school’s funds to procure an expensive Mercedes Benz for himself through fraudulent means.

The lecturers who were armed to the teeth in their numbers, blocked the road to prevent the Rector from having access to his office after he had allegedly threatened to fire a security officer at the school.
However, Prof Marfo-Owusu managed to escape the attack by the club-and stone-wielding-lecturers, but could not escape the chants, “thief, thief, thief,” from the lecturers.
The three Unions, the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG), the Polytechnic Administration Association of Ghana (PAAG) and the Polytechnic Workers Association of Ghana (POWAG), have all demanded his immediate removal from office.
The Rector, Prof Marfo-Owusu is alleged to have procured a brand new Mercedes Benz at the cost of ¢500,000 without the approval of the institution’s Governing Council.
The lecturers have therefore accused him of procurement fraud and abuse of office and have petitioned the school’s Governing Council to remove him from office until investigations vindicate him.
Although the petition has been granted, the Rector has sought a court injunction to prevent the Governing Council from investigating him.

This is said to have infuriated the lecturers of the Polytechnic after he drove the disputed Mercedes Benz to campus on Monday.
The angry lecturers who did not want Prof Marfo on campus until further investigations into the matter, resorted to mass action and took the law into their own hands.
Meanwhile, the embattled Rector sharing his ordeal on Joy News in Accra explained that, he did not circumvent any procurement procedure and challenged the lecturers to bring "whoever they want to go over all necessary documents."
According to him, if there is any problem with regards to buying the car at that high cost, they should blame the 'conditions of his service'.
“In my conditions of service, it was never stressed that the car I use should be ¢200,000 or ¢500,000…it said any car of your choice and there was no threshold of what the car should cost,” the Rector insisted.
Prof. Marfo-Owusu stated that having worked as a professor for more than seven years, he is capable of buying any Mercedes Benz of his choice.
“I am a person who has been well trained and has not taken anyone’s money…they [lecturers] are thinking that the car is very expensive,” he added.
