'Rotten' left hand of 5-year-old boy amputated

- The left hand of the five-year-old boy inflicted with a machete by his stepmother has been amputated

- According to doctors at the Cape Coast regional hospital, the hand needed to be amputated in order to prevent the decomposition from spreading to the shoulder region

Doctors at the Cape Coast Regional Hospital have amputated the left hand of the five-year-old boy whose hand was accidentally cut with a machete by his stepmother.

The wounded hand, according to doctors at the hospital, was beyond reconstruction after it was left unattended to, a month after his stepmother, in anger threw a machete at him.

Doctors also confirmed that the cells in the hands of the little boy were dead as the veins and cells in it have all died, while the decomposition was gradually spreading to the shoulder region.

District Police Commander for Abura Asebu Kwamankese, DSP John Akonde, told Joy News that the stepmother in a statement to the police admitted the offence but said it was purely accidental.

He said according to her, although she intended to hit the boy with the machete when she threw it at him, she did not plan for it to slash his hand.

“It happened about a month ago, they have been receiving treatment but it looks as if it was not going on well until two other people who went to the village, saw him and took him to the Social Welfare,” DSP Akonde added.

Meanwhile the Central Regional police have arrested the father and stepmother of the five-year-old boy whose arm was left to decompose after a cutlass wound was inflicted on him by the stepmother was left untreated.

The 36-year-old father, was arrested Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital when he went to sign a consent form for the left arm of the victim to be amputated.

The boy’s stepmother, an apparent remorseful 22-year-old pregnant Efua Baidoowa, was also arrested after visiting the victim, at the hospital on Tuesday.
