Anyone who jumps red light is criminal – COP Kofi Boakye

The Director-General of Police in charge of Research and Planning, COP Nathan Kofi Boakye, has called for strict enforcement of road traffic regulations in the country to reduce the high level of indiscipline on roads.

COP Nathan Kofi Boakye, the Director-General of Police in charge of Research and Planning, has called for stern enforcement of road traffic regulations in the country to minimize the high level of indiscipline on roads.

He said such petty crimes pose a long-term threat to national security and must be curbed.

COP Boakye, who was speaking on “security threats and challenges, mitigating measures” at a meeting of the Association of Women Accountants of Ghana in Tamale described those who violate the road traffic regulations as ‘mad, sick or criminals’.

“We have to start enforcing all laws. How come people jump red lights and just pass through. People who jump red lights are either mad or either sick or either a criminal who is running away from crime. We must find a way of dealing with such people. If we cannot fight the small crimes, then we cannot fight the big crimes. That’s the policy,” he said.

In recent times, the indiscipline and impunity on the roads have been topical, stirring national conversations over ways to deal with the worrying situation.

Citi FM and Citi TV launched the #WarAgainstIndiscipline campaign in May 2019 to help check all forms of indiscipline on roads, to avert the increasing loss of lives through road carnage, due to recklessness and general disregard for traffic regulations.

This particular campaign is also aimed at putting regulatory bodies on their toes to ensure that the various road safety laws are enforced.

Since the commencement of the campaign, the station has received endorsement from drivers, passengers, and some state institutions.

The campaign continues on Citi FM, Citi TV, citinewsroom.com and the station’s social media platforms to draw attention to the nuisance caused by drivers and motorbike riders on Ghana’s roads.

The general public is also encouraged to take videos and photos of persons who engage in these offences and send them to the official station’s WhatsApp contact – 0549986996 for onward forwarding to the appropriate quarters.
