Coup plot: Police refuse to release ACP Agordzo despite bail by Court

Despite being granted bail by an Accra High Court on Tuesday, ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo who is standing trial over an alleged coup plot is still being kept in police custody.

According to a brother of ACP Dr Agordzo, who gave his name as Cephas, said the senior police officer is still in custody somewhere in an “apartment” within the Police Headquarters.

He said the police refused to even allow him to go to court to sign his bail conditions and it had to take the court to write to the IGP for him to be escorted to do so.

Cephas Agordzo said the family thought it was the BNI which was behind the arrests, not knowing elements within the Ghana Police Service have a hand in the whole trial.

“Now we know it is Ghana Police CID who are doing the whole thing,” he told news presenter Alfred Ocansey.

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh earlier reported that the Criminal High Court has granted Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Agordzo a self recognizance bail.

The Court presided over by Justice Charles Ekow Baiden pegged the bail at GHc500,000.00. ACP Benjamin Agordzo was also instructed to submit his passport to the Registrar of the High Court.

He would also be required to present himself to the Inspector General of Police and the Director of BNI per the schedule presented in the ruling of the Court.

Lawyer for the accused, Martin Kpebu at the last Court sitting on January 16, 2020, noted that Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Benjamin Agordzo is a very senior police officer, he has a wife and children and was therefore not a flight risk whatsoever.
