Election verdict: Mahama to speak after losing election petition at 5pm

Former President and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC), John Dramani Mahama is expected to address Ghanaians today.
He would be speaking on the Supreme Court’s unanimous verdict dismissing his 2020 Election petition case.
Mahama who was contesting the validity of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) declaration of the 2020 presidential election would be speaking at 5:00 pm at his office in Cantonments in Accra.

One of Mahama’s spokespersons in the petition, Abraham Amaliba made this known shortly after the apex court’s judgment on Thursday, March 4, 2021.
According to him, unlike the usual post-proceedings press conferences, today’s address will be presented personally by the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) presidential candidate in the polls.
“We just heard the judgment of the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, we are not able to address you now. We shall however address you through our flagbearer at 5 pm at his office,” Amaliba announced.
YEN.com.gh earlier reported that the Supreme Court has dismissed John Mahama’s challenge to the 2020 presidential election results in the election petition trial.
Akufo-Addo defeated Mahama in the said election to secure another four-year term; collecting 51.302% of the votes cast against the latter’s 47.359%.
The votes difference between the two candidates stood at 517, 231, representing a four percentage point, one of the highest since 1996.
Presenting the court’s judgment on Thursday, March 4, 2021, the Chief Justice, Justice Anin Yeboah said President Nana Akufo-Addo obtained more than 50% of the total valid votes.
In other news, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wrote to the Electoral Commission (EC) demanding a refund of the filing fees its representatives paid for the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary polls.
The party in a letter signed by its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and sighted by YEN.com.gh provided the commission an account number in which to refund the money.
Ghana’s electoral laws require the EC to refund filing fees to candidates who attain certain thresholds after polls.
