Former president John Dramani Mahama has explained the rationale behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) decision to settle on Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman as the party’s running mate for the 2020 election.

Addressing party members in Accra a day after he announced the former Education Minister as his running mate, the NDC flagbearer said the party has demonstrated its willingness to allow women to participate at the highest level of decision-making in the country.

Mr. Mahama added that Ghana cannot develop and progress with only men at the helm of affairs.

He opined that the NDC has over the years given women the opportunity to lead by appointing them into positions of decision-making.

Naana Jane is an accomplished woman who has made her mark both nationally and internationally and it is my belief that as a social democratic party, and a progressive party at that, if any party must be positioned in the history of our country to create the opportunity for women to serve in the highest offices of the land, then it is no other party than the NDC.”

We open up the decision-making process to our female partners and show that together with them, we will move our country forward,” he stated.

The NDC flagbearer also stated that “the time is right” for a woman running mate.

He called on all Ghanaians and members of the NDC to support Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang.
