The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) arrested three Ghanaians who had illegally boarded a Europe-bound vessel in Côte d'Ivoire to migrate to Spain.

The three suspects who claimed to be cousins were arrested on Saturday, March 28, 2026, after the vessel, MT ANATOLIA, stopped at Dangote Terminal in Ibeju-Lekki.

According to DW Africa, the suspects were identified as Peter Armah, 26, Daniel Amisah, 22, and Michael Amoh, 25, said they were fishermen in Abidjan, where they resided before attempting to stowaway to Europe in search of greener pastures.

The three said they spent five days in the ship's rudder compartment, where they hid. According to the trio, they thought they had arrived in Europe, and that was why they came out of their hiding place and got discovered by the vessel's crew.

The trio blamed hardship and family pressures for their decision to stowaway. They claimed that they needed money to pay for the health bills of their sick parents back in Ghana.

They decided to hide in the vessel as some of their friends had in the past, since they could not afford the cost of legal migration.

The three cousins said they had regretted their actions and cautioned those intending to migrate to do so legally.

“I will never try this again. For those five days, we couldn’t sleep. The rudder compartment is so small that you are either squatting, moving around or going to the base of the ship to get some fresh air. We finished the gari and water we took on board and did not bathe throughout. When you want to defecate, you have to go down and do your business in the open sea,” narrated Michael Amoh.
