- Sanitation workers in Kerala win GH¢13,580,500 jackpot, lifting them from low-paying jobs to newfound prosperity.
- Determined women pooled money to buy a lottery ticket and unexpectedly won a huge amount.
- Despite the windfall, the women plan to continue their jobs, valuing the collective that brought them success.
A group of sanitation workers in the southern Indian state of Kerala is happy after winning a KSh 171 million jackpot.
They bought a lottery ticket at KSh 430
The determined women are part of a group tasked with collecting biodegradable waste from the Malappuram district; a job that pays them very little. They pooled money to buy a lottery ticket.
BBC reports that since the money was insufficient to meet their needs, most of them borrow money to afford various expenses for their children.
On June 30, the group bought a KSh 430 ticket for a monsoon bumper prize lottery (bumper prize lotteries are issued for special occasions such as festivals).
Kuttimalu, 72, says she was initially sad when Radha collected funds because she didn't have enough money.
"Then Cherumannil Baby (another member of the group) told me she was willing to lend me half for the ticket," she said on August 1.
Ladies get an equal share
"We agreed we would get an equal share if we won anything. We didn't expect to win such a huge amount of money!"Ms Kuttimalu said.
The women found out they had won a day after the draw when one of them asked her husband to check the results.
"This is the fourth time we bought a ticket for the bumper prize, we are fourth time lucky!" Ms Radha said.

At 50, K Bindu is a widow after her husband succumbed to kidney failure. His family was unable to afford the money for his transplant.
"He used to buy lottery tickets with the money we kept for dialysis. He left us without finishing the construction of our house. I have to complete it now," she said.
Each woman gets GH¢793,622
Some women hinted at using their money on their kids' studies, while others wanted to pay for their ailing daughter's surgery.
Each woman will get 10 million, while the two who shared the initial payment will get KSh 5 million each.
A day after their life-changing win, the 11 women reached the agency's office like always to resume their work.
