Finally, the 2018 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) happened on Saturday as the crème of the nation’s talent gathered to be celebrated.
The auditorium of the Accra International Conference Center (AICC) was fully packed with many more cheering for their artistes just outside the venue.
The many others who were behind their television sets all through the night to the early hours of Sunday are also countless, and that only shows how attracted people are to this award.
But as the various musicians walked onto the stage to receive their awards, the fans present were also more interested in the performances that will be showcased.
For the second year running, organisers of the VGMA opted for live band performances over miming. Honestly, not many Ghanaian artistes are comfortable with performing live, except for a few.
And when I say few, I mean very few.
Therefore, it was no surprise that the two men that came out with distinction were Samini and Sarkodie.
The experienced duo are among the most respected artistes in the country not just because of their impeccable songs but, more importantly, their hyper, attention-grabbing performances when they get on any stage.

Sarkodie’s entry was as magnificent as his performance, as the rapper chose to have a colourful choir behind him as backup artistes.
The BET winner then took turn to deliver to the audience a comprehensive performance that totally lit up the event.
As for Samini, not much can be said regarding his stage craft, having earned the tag as Ghana’s live band king. You may be right if you say the ‘my own’ hit maker is no longer among the swashbuckling artistes in the country at the moment.
However, when it comes to true performers, none comes close to him. Lyrically he is the best and he demonstrated that time and time again at the 2018 VGMA.
Samini’s ability to create good melody out of any sound from the band puts him in a class of his own.
