The world over, politicians are usually people with money. Whether they made it through fair or foul means, politicians are rarely caught without some prestige or class.
Indeed, you can find out that even for rich people who do not directly go into politics, they love to be associated with powerful politicians.
Some have explained that the reason it is usually the rich who go into politics is simply because it is only they who have the means to control what goes around in the society.
Perhaps, the biggest means of organising and controlling things in society is to own a media house. Whether an FM station or TV, many politicians can afford to have their own media.
YEN.com.gh lists four major reasons why politicians like to own media houses.
1. A good story
A politician will tell you that a good story matters. In politics and other areas, a good story is one that people find believable or interesting.
It does not matter very much if the good story is the truth or not. A media house in the pocket of a politician can come out with anything that makes the case for their owner.
2. The loudest person wins
A politician needs a good story. But that is not enough because the politician needs someone to make all the right noises about the story.
That is another place where the media comes in. Whether you are telling the truth or not, what matters is how many people can hear you.
3. It is important for the money
Media houses exist to give information. But media houses make money based on the fact that advertisers are willing to advertise with them.
However you want to look at it, politicians need money to continue being politicians. The media business may just be a money-making investment for the owner.

4. Attack the opponent
Among politicians, there can only be one winner. Politicians have to ensure that they are chose ahead of their colleagues.
If a politician owns a media house, that politicians owns the ability to research and shape the story that can hurt opponents. It is the easiest way to get these things done.
