Policemen at the Breman Asikuma police station in the Central region have been attacked by some family members of Kojo Abekah, a man who died in their custody following claims the policemen beat the suspect to death.
Family members of Kojo Abekah, a man who died in the custody of the Breman Asikuma Police Station in the Central region, have attacked policemen at the station after accusing them of beating the suspect to death.
According to the angry family members, the attack was a way to register their displeasure about the unfortunate death of their relative.
The irate family members pelted stones at the police officers on duty leaving the window glasses of the station broken.
A family member disclosed that the deceased was arrested following a swoop by the police on weed smokers in the area.
“The police assaulted the deceased physically after arresting him and our checks reveal he was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital after he was rushed there.
“We are giving a 24-hour ultimatum to the police to have something meaningful to tell us, else we will burn down the police station,” he said.
Reacting to the issue, the District Police Commander of Breman Asikuma, Chief Supt. Donkor Baah denied the allegations by the family.
“The deceased complained of sickness while at the cells last night and was sent to Our Lady of Grace Hospital for treatment but died some hours later,” Chief Supt. Baah clarified.
Meanwhile, station officers at the unit are currently on the run after the Breman Asikuma residents destroyed property at the police station.
