Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is one of the premier health-care facilities with an outstanding track record in Ghana. As the only public tertiary medical facility in the southern part of the country, it is also a teaching hospital affiliated to several institutions of learning. It gained authorization from the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency after meeting up to their statutes in 2019.
Korle-Bu was founded under the regime of Sir Gordon Guggisberg initially as a general hospital to address the health needs of the homegrown populace. Its root meaning is Valley of the Korle Lagoon. Since its establishment, the hospital has continuously served as a place where many find assistance and solution to persisting health issues that have defied treatment at other hospitals within and outside the country.
The hospital's expertise in offering specialized services is top-notch. It has a record of being the first hospital to carry out a kidney transplant in Ghana in 2008. It is also one of the few clinics where complex laboratory investigations are performed. Likewise, it offers services such as brachytherapy intervention for prostate cancer therapy and keyhole surgeries.
When was Korle-bu Teaching Tospital established?
Korle-bu Teaching hospital was founded on October 9, 1923, and it has evolved over the years from a 200-bed capacity to more than 1,500-bed capacity. Presently, it is rated as the third largest hospital in Africa and the leading national referral centre in Ghana. The present Korle-Bu CEO is Dr Daniel Asare.
The growth in population and the proven potency of the treatment offered to patients led to an increase in hospital attendance. By 1953, the demand for the hospital's services had become so high that the government was left with the singular choice of setting up a task force to evaluate the situation and make recommendations for the extension of the medical care centre.
After the recommendations' approval, more structures were erected, which also led to the evolution of child health, surgical, maternity, and medical blocks. This also increased the bed capacity of the health-care facility to 1,200. Then, in 1962, the facility gained prominence and status after founding the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) to train medical doctors.
With five other schools, the institution has been fixed under the College of Health Sciences to prepare a collection of health specialists. All clinical practices and researches are now carried out in the hospital. Currently, the hospital possesses 2,000 beds with an average attendance of 1,500 patients and over 250 patients on admission daily.
