When was Korle-bu Teaching Tospital established?

Korle-bu Teaching hospital was founded on October 9, 1923, and it has evolved over the years from a 200-bed capacity to more than 1,500-bed capacity. Presently, it is rated as the third largest hospital in Africa and the leading national referral centre in Ghana. The present Korle-Bu CEO is Dr Daniel Asare.

The growth in population and the proven potency of the treatment offered to patients led to an increase in hospital attendance. By 1953, the demand for the hospital's services had become so high that the government was left with the singular choice of setting up a task force to evaluate the situation and make recommendations for the extension of the medical care centre.

After the recommendations' approval, more structures were erected, which also led to the evolution of child health, surgical, maternity, and medical blocks. This also increased the bed capacity of the health-care facility to 1,200. Then, in 1962, the facility gained prominence and status after founding the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) to train medical doctors.
