Akufo-Addo vs Mahama: Ghanaian celebs who have switched from NDC to NPP

We have barely two weeks to Ghana's general elections on December 7, 2020, to elect a president and 275 parliamentarians.

As we get closer, the campaign trail is getting hotter and many Ghanaian entertainers (celebrities) are joining the campaign to endorse candidates.

Recently music artistes Samini and Sarkodie were in the news for endorsing President Nana Akufo-Addo for a second term.

While Samini released a full campaign song for Akufo-Addo titled Kpoyaka, Sarkodie's version came in a subtle manner in his Happy Day song featuring Kuami Eugene.

The songs from the two led to a lot of discussions on celebrity endorsement for political parties in Ghana.

In this article, YEN.com.gh looks at some popular entertainment personalities who switched their allegiance from NDC to NPP and/or John Mahama to Akufo-Addo.

1. Afia Schwarzenegger:

Commedienne Afia Schwarzenegger was a staunch supporter of John Mahama and the NDC in 2016 and she campiagned publicly for them.

And she has since the party lost in 2016 been known to be a sympathiser until a little over three months ago when she announced her endorsement for the NPP.

Known to have been close to Mahama, Schwar's switch has come as a big surprise.

2. Empress Gifty:

The gospel singer campaigned for John Mahama and the NDC in 2016 citing the former president's humility as one of the reasons why she decided o support him.

But in 2020, things have changed. The singer got married to NPP's Hopeson Adorye in December 2018.

Adorye later won the party's parliamentary primary at Kpone Katamanso and the singer has been supporting his campaign and that Akufo-Addo.

So she is now a full-blown NPP member by marriage.

3. Agnes Annan a.k.a. Maame Fante (Empress Gifty's mother):

Kumawood actress Agnes Annan a.k.a Maame Fante who is the mother of Empress Gifty supported Mahama in 2016 and even likened him to Kwame Nkrumah.

But in 2020, she has switch camp to the NPP just like her daughter.

5. Special mentions:

Veteran actress Grace Omaboe and Highlife legend Nana Kwame get special mentions here because their support for NDC predates the era of Mahama but fall into the general idea of celebrities ditching the party t support NPP.

a. Grace Omaboe:

The actress who is popularly known as Maame Dokono was close to Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings during her time as the first lady.

Omaboe contested the parliamentary seat for Birim North in 2000 and 2004 on the ticket of the NDC.

But she defected to support Akufo-Addo against the late John Atta Mills in 2008.

Maame Dokono also supported Akufo-Addo against Mahama in 2012 and even contested an NPP parliamentary primary.

b. Nana Kwame Ampadu

Nana Kwame Ampadu was an NDC man throughout the tenure of J.J. Rawlings and even composed songs for the party.

But he switched in 2008 and has been with NPP ever since. He has even composed a song for Akufo-Addo.

Apart from these celebrities, many others have made their choices between Akufo-Addo and Mahama ahead of the polls December 7 polls
