The Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Professor Abraham K. Anang has lamented the increased number of cases of the coronavirus pandemic.
Professor Anang said the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Ghana is as a result of recklessness and disregard of safety protocols.
He said health authorities recently indicated that a cumulative number of 55,220 cases of the coronavirus had been recorded in the country out of which 3,580 health workers were infected.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event, Prof. Anang said Ghana will continue to record more cases until people strictly adhere to safety protocols.
“Many people in Ghana are not taking the effective preventive precautions well and therefore end up getting infected and until we stop that, then it means we will still be in a form of a challenge,” he said.
His comment comes in the wake of the emergence of new COVID-19 cases in the Western Region, following months of zero cases.
The coronavirus pandemic was frst recorded in Ghana on Thursday, March 12, 2020 after it was announced to have been first recorded in Wuhan China.
The first two cases were imported cases from a Ghanaian and a Norwegian national who was out of the country.
In other news, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has ranked Ghana as the second country behind Nigeria to have the highest coronavirus cases in West and Central Africa combined.
As at the 31st of December, Ghana’s total confirmed coronavirus cases was 54,771.
Already, government is racing to avert the importation of a deadlier and contagious Coronavirus.
The major task ahead for Ghana’s infectious disease center will be to trace and track if the new contagious variant of Covid-19 is in the country.
