Former National Security Advisor, Brigadier-General Nunoo Mensah (rtd), has made a startling disclosure about the late former President, Jerry John Rawlings.

According to Brigadier-General Nunoo Mensah, he ditched the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) with Rawlings’ unflinching blessing.
“The late President Rawlings encouraged me to leave the NDC and join GUM,” the retired Brigadier-General revealed on e.TV’s Ghana’s Fact Sheet Show.
Brigadier-General Nunoo Mensah added that “Rawlings himself felt he risked his life for the country and still achieved nothing.”
Rawlings died on November 12, 2020, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, whilst receiving treatment after a short illness.
He was 73.
He was laid to rest on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, after four days of final funeral rites in his honour.
Born on June 22, 1947, Rawlings twice overthrew what he believed were corrupt regimes in Ghana and seized power.
In June 1979, with the help of other junior officers, he overthrew the military government of Ignatius Kutu Acheampong and Lieut. Gen. Frederick W.K. Akuffo.
Rawlings re-established multi-party democracy in Ghana after 11 years of military rule.
The first presidential election since 1979 was held in 1992 to usher in the fourth republic.
He won that year’s election and was re-elected four years later. The 2000 election tested Rawlings’ commitment for the return to multi-party democracy, and he passed with distinction.
He peacefully handed over power to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2001.
In other news, Brigadier-General Nunoo Mensah warned that Ghana is slowly becoming a haven for anarchy in every format under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Nunoo Mensah’s warning comes on the back of the forceful removal of the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, DCOP Ayensu Opare Addo (rtd) by members of the dreaded Delta Force—a vigilante group affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“We have been doing this for the past four to five years…it’s not the first time in Kumasi where a coordinator was removed in a similar fashion,” he stated on Starr FM’s Morning Starr and monitored by YEN.com.gh on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.
“There must be an end to this because if we don’t stop it, we’re moving into a state of anarchy…With what I’m seeing today, it’s like going back to the past. If we don’t deal with them and pull out, we’re heading into political anarchy,” he added.
“The president must see to it that there’s order and security in the country. Ghana is sliding slowly but surely into anarchy,” he stressed.
DCOP Ayensu Opare Addo (rtd) was forcefully removed from office as the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator by some members of the disbanded vigilante group affiliated to the ruling government—the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—the Delta Force.
Handcuffed like a common criminal, the former Ashanti Regional Police Commander was dragged out of office by the thugs in deviance of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s directive for DCOP Opare Addo to continue.
