According to an official statement from Kenya Railways, the woman was lucky to have Dr Indanyenyi Luseso onboard who performed the delivery.

He was assisted by Fauziya Lugogo, a nurse at Kenyatta National Hospital and the Madaraka Express passenger attendant Mary Nyiha.

"She was rushed to Mariakani sub-county hospital for further medical assistance. Both the mother and the baby are okay," reads the statement.

Photos captured after the delivery show passengers and members of the crew joyfully sharing heartwarming moments with the new mother.

Baby should be given lifetime tickets, netizens

Arguable, the most commendable part of the story is that the medics performed a successful delivery with limited resources available on the train.

It will also be noted that there was no delivery room, so they had to make do with one of the compartments to create a comfortable environment for the mother.

The push comes from the fact that some airlines usually give babies born aboard their aircrafts lifetime tickets, as reported by the New York Post.

Public pushes for train to have medics on call

The incident cast light on the need for the Madaraka Express service to employ paramedics who accompany the trains on all journeys for the sake of such occurrences.

Daniel Kimani:

"That child should be given a golden ticket that allows the child to get SGR services free of charge in his/her lifetime."

Congratulations. I once travelled and one passenger became sick, a doctor was sought for assistance within the passengers. I hope in future an attendant with medical background will be employed to attend to such."

Chumbow Ngum Emem:

"Does the baby and parents have a lifetime of free trips aboard Kenya Railways trains? Do the nurse and doctors get a gift or something?"
